Short answer: Pomade is a hair styling product that gives your hair hold and shine. Think slick back, side part, or that neat "just got a haircut" look. It comes in two types. Oil-based pomade stays soft all day and you can restyle it, but it is hard to wash out. Water-based pomade washes out with plain water and shampoo, but it sets harder and you can't restyle it as much. In Indian heat and humidity, water-based is often easier to live with.
What does "pomade" mean?
The word comes from the French "pommade". Old recipes used apple ("pomme") in the mix. Today there is no apple in it. Pomade just means a styling product with a shiny, slick finish.
If wax is the all-rounder and clay is the matte one, pomade is the shiny one. Not sure which of the three you need? Read hair wax vs clay vs pomade first.
Water-based vs oil-based pomade
| Water-based pomade | Oil-based pomade | |
|---|---|---|
| Feel in the hand | Gel-like, smooth | Thick, greasy, like a balm |
| Finish | Shiny, sometimes a bit wet-looking | Shiny, soft glow |
| During the day | Sets and stays put | Stays soft, slowly loosens |
| Restyle with a comb later? | A little. Wet your hands first. | Yes, easily |
| Washing out | Water and one round of shampoo | Often needs 2–3 shampoos or an oil pre-wash |
| On your pillow | Mostly fine | Can leave oily marks |
| Good for | Daily office or college, hot days | Classic slick looks, weekends, special events |
Who should use pomade?
- You want shine. Pomade is for a polished, glossy look. If you want a dry, messy look, a clay or matte wax suits you more. See matte vs shine.
- Your hair is short to medium. Side parts, slick backs, pompadours and quiffs are pomade's home ground.
- Your hair is thick or straight. Pomade helps tame it into clean lines.
- Your hair is thin. Go easy. Shine can show more scalp, and a heavy product can make thin hair look flat.
How to use pomade (in 4 steps)
- Start with towel-dried hair for water-based, or dry hair for oil-based.
- Take a small amount, about the size of a pea. You can always add more.
- Rub it between your palms until it is spread thin. Then work it from the back of your head to the front.
- Comb it into shape. A fine comb gives clean lines; fingers give a softer look.
Pomade in Indian weather
Sweat and humidity are the tricky part. Oil-based pomade can feel heavy and greasy on a hot afternoon in Chennai or Mumbai. Water-based pomade holds its shape better in the heat, but if you sweat a lot it can feel sticky. Use less than you think and blow-dry your hair first if you can. More tips in our guide to styling in humid weather.
How to wash out pomade
Water-based: rinse with warm water and shampoo once. Oil-based: rub a little coconut oil or conditioner into dry hair first, then shampoo two times. Full steps here: how to wash out hair wax, clay and pomade.
FAQs
What is pomade used for?
Pomade is used to style hair with hold and shine. It is popular for slick backs, side parts, pompadours and quiffs.
Is water based pomade better than oil based?
Neither is better for everyone. Water-based washes out easily and suits daily use in hot weather. Oil-based lets you restyle all day and gives a softer shine, but it is harder to wash out.
Is pomade bad for hair?
Pomade only sits on top of your hair. The main thing is to wash it out properly so it does not build up on your scalp. If you notice itching, dandruff or hair fall, stop using it and see a dermatologist.
Pomade vs wax, what is the difference?
Pomade gives more shine and a slicker look. Wax usually gives a medium shine and a more textured, touchable look. Wax is easier for messy styles; pomade is easier for neat ones.
Can I use pomade every day?
Yes, many people do. A water-based pomade is easier for daily use because it washes out with one shampoo.
