Hair Wax vs Clay vs Pomade: Which One Should You Use?

Short answer: hair clay gives a matte, textured look. Hair wax gives a natural to light shine and stays easy to restyle. Pomade gives a neater, shinier, polished finish. Pick the one that matches the look you want.

Wax, clay, gel, pomade. Four words that sound like the same thing. They're not. Here's the short version, so you can pick one and get on with your day.

First: what's a pomade?

"Pomade" is the umbrella word for styling products that come in a jar. The real difference between them is the base, and that decides the finish and how it feels in your hair.

Hair clay

Finish: matte, low or no shine.
Feels like: dry and textured, not greasy.
Good for: messy, textured looks, short-to-medium hair, and making fine hair look fuller.
Pick it if: you want your hair to look styled without looking like there's product in it. More in hair clay for men.

Hair wax

Finish: natural to light shine.
Feels like: soft and pliable, so you can rework it through the day.
Good for: defined, piece-y styles and quick fixes.
Pick it if: you like a bit of shine and want to be able to restyle with your fingers.

Pomade and gel pomade

Finish: usually shinier, more polished.
Feels like: smooth going in. Water-based ones set as they dry and rinse out easily.
Good for: slick-backs, side parts and neater, structured shapes.
Pick it if: you want a clean, put-together look. Choosing between wax and plain gel? See hair wax vs gel.

Quick picker

  • Want matte and messy? Clay.
  • Want a bit of shine and to restyle later? Wax.
  • Want neat and polished? Pomade.

How much to use

Start with a pea-sized amount, whichever you pick. Warm it between your palms first, work it in from the roots, then shape. Most "greasy" or "heavy" results come from using too much, not from the product. More in how much hair clay to use.

FAQ

Which is easiest for a beginner?

Clay or wax. Both are easy to rework with your fingers, so mistakes are easy to fix. Start with clay if you want no shine, wax if you want a little.

Is clay or wax better for thin hair?

Clay usually suits thin or fine hair better. A matte, textured finish makes hair look fuller, while shine can make thin hair look flatter.

Can I mix clay and wax?

Yes. Some people mix a small amount of each to get texture with a little shine. Start with a tiny bit of both, warmed together in your palms.
